Why can't I receive new messages unless I close and reopen thunderbird?

I can click on "Get New Messages" all day long, but I won't get any new messages until I close Thunderbird and then reopen it and re-enter my password. Also, next to this particular email address, there is a lock symbol on the envelop icon. Why is that there?

The lock says the connection to the server is secure.

Get mail works only for the "current" account. Use the drop down arrow beside it and select get ALL new messages. (OR use Shift+F5)

Work any better?
