I just replaced my PC hard drive, Windows 10. I installed Firefox browser from Microsoft store. I have signed into my Firefox account online (that's where I am here, now). I wish to restore the Firefox settings, history and bookmarks as they appeared using the previous hard drive. When I just now installed and chose Firefox as my default browser, I was asked if I wanted to migrate settings from a previous browser. None of the choices was Firefox. I think I know why, but shouldn't I be able to import settings, etc. from my account? Is there a way to get all that back?

Thank You. Larry Young

Hi

Thank you for your question about the Firefox Sync service.

It appears from your question, that you are using Firefox Sync as a back up service. This is not what Sync is designed to do. The Firefox Sync service takes a copy of the data you wish to include and transfers it to a second device (typically a mobile device such as a tablet or a telephone) running a copy of Firefox. The storage in between all attached devices is both temporary and fragile and is not stable enough to be (and is not designed as) a reliable backup service.

If you have a copy of your Firefox profile for desktop Firefox, you may be able to recover your bookmarks and other data. Please have a read of this article.

If you have a copy of your data on a mobile version of Firefox, please follow these instructions to connect it to Firefox Sync to copy your data.

Thanks for your response. Apparently I was not clear. I apologize for the confusion. No, I did not use Firefox Sync as a back up service. When the new hard drive was installed today, data was restored from OneDrive. I also had it backed up to an external drive. However, apps were not backed up, so I reinstalled the Firefox app from the website. Before and after the reinstall, I signed into my Firefox account at the Firefox website and found nothing which might appear to give me back my bookmarks. As you suggested, there is an 'Old Firefox Data" folder on my PC. Within it there is a "bookmarksbackup' folder which shows to contain several bookmark files. However, I cannot open any of them, the most recent of which was created 3/17/21. That is puzzling, because I created bookmarks just this week. A Properties search shows these to be 'JSONLZ4 File (.jsonlz4' files. That means nothing to me, but it might be meaningful to you. The article to which you referred me does not cover anything I could find regarding recovering from a discarded/replaced hard drive.

Thank you.

If you (re)installed Firefox from the Microsoft Store then this version might have created a new default-release profile since this version is installed in a different Firefox program folder than Firefox from the Mozilla servers.
