Cannot insert images into emails

I'm using Thunderbird version 81.0b2 and can no longer insert images into the body of an email, it must always be attached instead. "Don't use alternate text" is selected. But when I insert an image I only get a white box. If I try to send the email I get an error msg that says, "Sending of the message has failed. There was an error attaching (name of image file). Please check that you have access to the file." The file is an image I created and have saved on my desktop, so I obviously have access to it. Also, when someone sends me an email with attached images they only appear as white boxes as well. The only way to view them is to open them individually. But there is no way to access more than the 8 that appear along the bottom of the email unless I download and save all of them. I have tried changing delivery format to HTML only or HTML and text, but that makes no difference. This has been happening since the last update to Thunderbird. PLEASE HELP!!
