Firefox (FF) doesn't remember bookmarks from HTML file, nor does it remember a new home page

I can have a FF session open, and set a new home page, as well as import a HTML file of my Safari bookmarks. All is well until I quit FF, which, upon reopening, diverts back to the default FF home page and no imported bookmarks show up.
