What happened to firefogg?
There was an add on called firefogg that converted video to WebM and it now no longer works. What happened and is there an alternate program?

This is their site : https://firefogg.org/ Firefox will no longer support extensions like Firefogg. As of today, the new Web Extensions framework can not be used to write a new Firefogg.
There is no easy cross platform replacement we can recommend, but you should be able to find a tool that fits your needs.

Is there a way to still use firefogg as a stand alone product? It seems that web browsers like mozilla primarily support VP9 yet reasonable programs to convert to VP9 are disappearing. Even though mozilla claims to be open source one has to pay an extremely high price for Level 2 HDR VP9 encoding. An analogy would be a beautiful island free to all travelers that cost $100,000.0 for boatride to the island.
Think this is a no go as is not being updated or signed.
Without knowing your Operating System (not showing here) nor what Firefox Version you are running I can not suggest a few things.
Thing is if not supported that's that really. Need to find another boat as was suggested by googling for a alternative.

The current Firefogg version is still available and claims to support Firefox 52 and later.

Well thanks for the reply yet I haven't been able to find a good alternative to Firefogg. I just received a quote from a product called Eve that is an encoding solution that netflix is using. They only want $50K/month. The cold truth is that to have access to a high quality VP9 encoding solution on a windows machine is very expensive. You can't name one reliable top notch VP9 encoder. Main Concept is not interested, Handbrake doesn't support, etc... I'd like to see youtube be required to send back the the encoded web-m file to the uploading customer.

From what I can see, Firefogg used the free program FFmpeg (http://ffmpeg.org/) for VP9 encoding using libvpx-vp9 (https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/Encode/VP9).
The secret of how Firefogg translated from convenient option selection to command-line parameters is buried in the extension's source code. It might be easier to find good guides/forums to FFmpeg than to understand that.
Yes it was a simple yet very easy to use Web-M solution. It would accept Prores4444 files with wav audio and convert to Web-M. Is there a way mozilla can bring it back?

You can install any version of Firefox you like, but you need to accept certain security vulnerabilities and you need to know what version you want/need.
What version are you running now?
The most up-to-date "old" version is 45.9.0esr (Extended Support Release) from April. That has been replaced by the ESR of Firefox 52, so it will not receive any further security patches. One way to test with that might work is to load the extension into a "portable" version of Firefox 45.8.0esr.
There are several language selections, so make sure to download the one with your preferred language in the file name (where you can't see the full name, hover for a few moments to see the full file name).
After downloading, run the EXE installer and it will drop a clean version of Firefox into a folder -- I suggest just keeping it in the Downloads folder for convenient access. It doesn't interfere with your main installation of Firefox, but you may not be able to run them at the same time.
For your regular installation of Firefox, if you don't already, you could consider changing your startup setting from "Show your home page" to "Show your windows and tabs from last time" so that you can resume your work more quickly. (Assuming you use regular windows rather than private windows, and don't flush all your history at every shutdown.)
Your solution worked I just loaded the English version of the Portible version 45.8 in your link and firefogg was able to run. Bravo nice workaround. Your able to input a prores4444 file with wav SS and even output a 5.1 opus sound track. You can then make "HDR" VP9 with this program.
I did a WebM encode the tried again today and something is shutting down the ability to run firefogg on the portable edition.? bummer
Does FirefoxPortable update itself? You can check the current version using the Troubleshooting Information page. Either:
- "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
- (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
- type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter
It would be in the first table on the page -- is it still 45.8.0esr?
I got Firefox portable to work again with firefogg. When I went into hx and clicked the link from yesterday it activated again. It does try to update itself to a more current version. I did some additional testing with firefogg and it will accept UHD Prores4444XL as a source file. I would enjoy talking with the developer of firefogg to see what the future holds. It would be nice to have available without a convoluted work around.
