How do I stop tabs proliferation when I click on an email address?

I just downloaded the new mac os and switched apple mail to firefox as default. Now, whenever I click on an e-address, firefox comes up and tabs start accumulating uncontrollably. What can I do to fix this? I wanted to get out of apple mail, but this is even worse.

When you chose to switched apple mail to firefox as default you created a never-ending circle.

Type about:preferences#applications<enter> in the address bar. Look for mailto and press the button to its right.

Replace Firefox with your default Mail program.
