Yahoo Groups Problems - All downloads from files blocked

more options

Recently Firefox seems to be blocking all downloads from Yahoo Groups files sections. As the downloads are randomized strings that change on a regular basis this appears to be a blanket ban. I know some groups may contain malicious data, but to block all of groups is plain stupid.

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache. In order to try to fix these problems, the first step is to clear both cookies and the cache. Note: This will temporarily log you out of all sites you're logged in to. To clear cache and cookies do the following:

Go to Firefox > History > Clear recent history or (if no Firefox button is shown) go to Tools > Clear recent history.
Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
From the details list, check Cache and Cookies and uncheck everything else.
Now click the Clear now button.

Further information can be found in the Clear your cache, history and other personal information in Firefox article.

One more solution

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

   * On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

The same fault has been reported by several members of the Yahoo groups I manage. Seems to be limited to "zip" files but none download. Disabling the security check allows it to proceed.

Hi g4ugm, do you mean that the downloads panel shows the download was blocked for security reasons?

If you trust the file, you can allow it: right-click that item and check the context menu for that option.

The pop up box clearly says that the file has a virus, not that it might have a virus, but I can now download the file.

The ZIP file contains thre text files, so cannot contain a virus. Blocking all ZIP files on Yahoo is silly and over-reacting. You might as well stop all files from Wordpress sites because they are often hacked.

I am sorry but as this is causing me work in supporting my Yahoo groups in future I am going to recomend users use another browser.

Note that Chrome which is supposed to use the same blacklist downloads the files perfectly happily.

Can you give a link to a post that has this problem?

Yes, you are correct, the image I linked from the article has older wording.

Note that Chrome which is supposed to use the same blacklist downloads the files perfectly happily.

Firefox downloads the SafeBrowsing list on a schedule and doesn't submit your URLs to Google in real-time, but the delay in getting an updated list shouldn't be more than a couple hours.

Its pretty pointless trying to submit "yimg" (the Yahoo files download site) as the URLS are only valid for a few minutes and change frequently. As I said it appeared to be blocking many "zip" files. The ones I looked were in the LTSPICE, and HERCULES-390 groups. The URLS are like this.

https://xa.yimg.com/df/LTspice/William+Kidd+Opto+Triac.zip?token=oeXQH2TOsu-w2Kyi8ZKilo1X4ZDVmKfuDYKrChQMn-FImnrnKSmK6IL3LceK3OZVgEWVVmlTQ5e_o7rRop3E69nqLnsrsNIxDw4uzu0EgP0W67vqdW8GFyavj2wSue-6rlcoRvWq8jg&type=download

but they now appear to download correctly...

Hmm, yes, seems to be unblocked now. I don't know whether the host was added to the list based on a user report or an automated detection, but it's the same potential overinclusiveness problem SafeBrowsing has with any file sharing site.
