I saved websites on the hard-drive, when I try to open them, they only open as the homepage.

The only way I can open them, is by clicking on file and open. It used to work, but every time I double click on the item with the mouse, it opens in the homepage.

Chosen solution

The possibility is there, but when I do, it doesn't go to the page that was saved if I have to. But it does with Chrome. So I think I'll stick with it for saved pages.

Usually, double-clicking a file will perform the default action. When you right-click, the default action usually is indicated by bold type. So if Open is bold, I would expect the same behavior. (At least, in theory, based on Windows 7 and earlier.)

When you right-click, are you choosing Open and Windows is automatically opening the file in Firefox, or do you need to choose a program?

Thanks for answering. Firefox is the default program. It doesn't open whenever I double click, always goes to the homepage. If I right click, and it gives the option, I can choose the default browser, then I again choose firefox and it opens the proper page that I want it to open. It is a bit tedious to do every time, and it doesn't always give the "Choose default browser" option.

Hi psollorz, for the saved pages, what is the file extension? For example, .htm, .html, .mhtml, etc.?

If Windows does not normally show files extensions on most files, you probably have the default setting of hiding them. In order to troubleshoot problems with opening files, it is best to turn off the hiding. This article lists the steps: [http://support.microsoft.com/kb/865219.

They are HTML documents, the Fix it program wouldn't run on my "operating system" or "application version".

Hi psollorz, instead of using the Fixit program, change the settings by hand in Windows Explorer. Assuming that still exists in Windows 8.1.

Could you do the default browser double-switch to update the Registry settings? What I mean is, make Internet Explorer your default browser. This will update the registry so that double-clicking HTML files will open them in IE. Then make Firefox your default browser again, and the setting should be switched to Firefox.

One way to do that is through each browser's options dialog. Another is through the Windows Control Panel or as described in this article for Windows 8: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/choose-programs-windows-uses-default

Thanks for your reply. I tried what you suggested. I have the same problem with Internet Explorer. I went back to Firefox and it didn't fix it. I wonder what is causing it. I recently upgraded to 26.0, and I had "Ask.com" also recently take over the homepage, I got rid of it and ever since I've had this problem. I'm about ready to throw in the towel.

Since you have the same issue with IE, I wonder whether it is a Windows problem? You could try Microsoft's support for IE and see whether they have a solution. One thread suggested this:

Thanks for the suggestion. I installed google chrome, and made that the default browser, and that made it work. I like firefox though so I'm not 100% happy, but it will have to do. Thanks for all your suggestions though.

Without removing Chrome, can you still choose another default browser?
