Why do I have to sign in when I start using Thunderbird?
Until a month or so ago, when starting t.bird, all I had to do was click on the icon. Now I have to choose my user profile each time even though default is checked. Baby steps please.
Chosen solution
Remove the -p switch. It should simply end with "thunderbird.exe". The -p switch is used to launch the profile manager. You must have added it and forgot about it, or someone else did.

Right-click the shortcut (icon) you use, select Properties and check if the Target field ends with "thunderbird.exe" -p
It does. Now what?
yes, it does. Now what?
