I'm trying to download an installer package (.exe), and Firefox keeps downloading it as a "general file". It downloads fine from other browsers...
Once downloaded from Firefox, it is simply listed as a "file" without an extension (so it doesn't run). Any ideas why it downloads as an .exe on Chrome and IE but comes across different from Firefox?

Hello bluskygirl, I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing issues, but I think I might have found a fix for you! Simply visit the following support page and follow the instructions given there. If that doesn't work, you might want to try launching Firefox with the Add-Ons disabled and run an anti-virus scan on your system.
Thank you for your interest in Firefox and let me know how it goes!
You can also try to delete the mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox Profile Folder to reset all file actions.
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/File_types_and_download_actions#Resetting_download_actions
You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:
- Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
Thanks for the tips. I'll give them a try. I am almost wondering if Firefiox is seeing the file as dangerous and so converting when it downloads so that the file can't be opened?
