my ID reader does not connect with e.gov.be. Error code ssl_error_handshake_failure_alert. Who can help?

I am trying to connect to the confidential site of the belgian government to obtain personal information on matters like tax on web and pension schemes etc. My ID card reader works well and is showing my ID on the computer, but the connection with the e.gov.be fails as it says that it cannot obtain the info from my ID card. I have successfully installed the eIDMiddleware software.
