There is no need to uninstall Firefox before downgrade. But make a backup copy of your bookmarks and profile folder before new installation even though the downgrade procedure leaves your profile folder untouched.

Firefox 8 is not longer in beta; it was released as an update to Firefox 7.0.1 on 2011-11-08.

What does the text say when you go to Help > About Firefox (like in the image that I posted, outlined in red)? Does it say:

• "You are currently on the release update channel" (this means you are getting only the most current release versions)
• "You are currently on the beta update channel" (this means you are getting only the most current beta versions)

FoulRift, depends how one conceives of "beta".

8.0 is considered a non-beta release, but it's arguable that FireFox has been in a perpetual "beta mode" since 4.0 came out  ;-)

But, no, the official designation of 8.0 is that it's the actual release, not a beta. Safebrowser is right, though; if you don't want to update to each beta release, ensure you are not set up for beta updates, as per his description.

FYI, each release is in the Nightly channel for 6 weeks (very early developemnt), then the Aurora channel (development) for 6 weeks, then in the Beta channel (final development and clean-up) for 6 weeks before being released, for a total of 18 weeks before being released.

That is basically the same as in the past. The only difference is that

• the time periods have been shortened
• new Firefox releases are made every 6 weeks to get new enhancements to users sooner, rather that waiting for major fixes and/or security issue corrections as in the past.

Well, I don't want to turn poor FoulRift's question into a debate over the "Rapid Release" program. I realize this is a forum for solving problems, not debating policy.

The occasional comical quip aside  ;-)

I'll just leave it with the notion that I am greatly concerned with this approach. But we needn't discuss it here, at length (if you know a forum which is conducive to such discussion, let me know. I would like to hear more opinions from other users).

I do feel it's important to recognize, though, that many people feel that the rapid release program leaves FF in a more beta-like state than before. I know what the official press releases state, but in practice, that is debatable. Which does bear on the original question; if he doesn't like betas, he might find himself preferring to not update to each new release as fast as they come out.

Guys-please excuse my lack of understanding of the rapid release program.It was not my intention to hijack any ones thread or start any kind of heated discussion. I like Firefox and will continue using it.As far as rapid release goes,I will have to get used to it.

Another user interjected incorrect comments and opinions that were not an answer to your question. I was trying to give correct information to you and other readers regarding the development process and how beta versions fit into that development process.

Most importantly, did you determine from the information in my first and second replies whether you are on the release or the beta update channel?

I was going to let this lie, even after your implications I "hijacked" this thread, using my comments out of context to try to back up that implication. But you're engaging in ad hominems and incorrect opinions, so I feel I need to defend myself a little, here. Did you get up on the wrong side of the bed, this morning?

And, FoulRift, this discussion doesn't reflect on you. You just got caught up in the middle of it. You hijacked nothing, that was SafeBrowser's comment towards me. I do hope you are able to get your versions working properly. Don't hesitate to ask more questions or post another thread if you have more difficulties.

As long as you update from the Help > About Firefox screen, you will always remain on the update channel indicated on that screen as indicated in my prior posts in this thread.

• This method downloads and installs an incremental update (much smaller download file than the full installer)
• Downloading and installing a full installer version from any other channel over the top of your current version will automatically change you to that update channel

If you ever need the full installer file for the current release version you can download and SAVE it to your hard drive from the following link (just choose your OS and Firefox interface language)

I will not post the links for nightly, aurora or beta version downloads as you have expressed an aversion to using any version other than final release versions of Firefox. I am also not posting the link to the other fully supported release version (Firefox 3.6.24) as support for that version is likely to end in the first quarter of 2012.

@kosh.. I had FF7 & did the FF8 upgrade (?) & having severe problems with it & the RR in general. With all these comments going back & forth I thought I would get my answer here on doing a retrograde back to 7 & is it still possible or not ? If there is a yes to that Q please advise. I've had to remove several addon's & 2 programs in hopes of resolving this 8 issue & fear its putting undo hardship on my new laptop & HD. Thanks for any input..

Downgrading to Firefox 7 is not recommended as that version contains security and other issues that will not be fixed. Each new version of Firefox replaces the previous version. Only Firefox 3.6 is still supported, but that support will be ending in a few months.

@SafeBrowser I understand the replace factor with new editions on the RR program but 8 is giving me real headaches with hanging & freezing.. I don't know if anyone even reads those " Submit Feedback" things even when I post them on Twitter.. Have issues with FF when I have a tab opened to Twitter the two don't seem to like each other.. Really sad..

I'm sorry, but Firefox 8 is not compatible with my environment. Security updates are not a good enough reason to make past versions of a product unavailable.

I need Firefox 7 because the version of Cucumber/Selenium I am developing with does not work with Firefox 8. I can not change the version of Selenium that works with FF8 because it has gem version dependencies that I am not ready to support.

Would somebody please tell me how to get older versions of Firefox for Mac, and really, please set up an avenue in general that does not assume that the entire world is capable of using the version of your app that you deem appropriate.
