Hi,

Today, I have had continuous problems with the Firefox Browser. I have used FF for years and never had this type of problem. I am recieving error message after error message.

Firstly, the browser would not open as normal, so I restarted the computer, it still would not open, the error message was

"Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system."

I tried to close firefox from the task manager applications, but firefox was not listed as running there. I restarted the computer again, but the message appeared again. I then tried to open the profile manager, but the message appeared again.

I then decided to uninstall firefox and loose all my recent bookmarks and also of my other FF bookmark profiles. I downloaded and installed Firefox again. I then went to import my most recent backup html bookmarks, and found they were displayed oddly as notepad files in html and I had to right click one and change it back to "open with firefox". After this was done, every time I tried to backup the following message appeared:

"A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Script: chrome://browser/content/places/editBookmarkOverlay.js:971

I then cleared firefox history and cache, disabled all my firefox addons and extensions. I disabled my Norton security software and restarted firefox.

The message appeared again every time I tried to import bookmarks. The bookmarks would not import.

I then uninstalled Google Chrome browser from my system and restarted the computer, and tried to import bookmarks to firefox again, but the same message appeared.

As well as this message I aslo was getting variations in the numbers at the end of the message, another error message was A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Script: chrome://browser/content/browser.js:3565.

The only way I can use my html bookmarks now is on another computer which although some other different script ran during the import process at least they imported there.

Any advice towards fixing this problem on my main computer would be appreciated.

A large part of Firefox is written in JavaScript and XUL and Firefox uses the chrome:// protocol to access such build-in files. Files added by extension are also accessed this way.

The chrome protocol has nothing to do with the Google Chrome browser, so you can reinstall that application if you want to use it.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Does it work correctly with a clean profile without restoring files?

Did you restored a full profile folder?

It is better not to do that, but only restore the files that you really need.
