Why is history no longer kept >30 days when it is set to 180 days?

It used to be (kept 180 days). About 4 to 8 months ago it ceased to be kept more than a month. Have cleared and reset everything that I imagine could be related. Running Firefox 3.6.12 under XP SP3, 4G ram.

The setting Tools > Options > Privacy > History: "Remember visited pages for at least" refers to the number of days kept in memory (default is 90 days). The pref browser.history_expire_days determines what is stored in places.sqlite on disk and overrides the setting in Options > Privacy.
