I have Firefox 3.6.8. If I start Firefox by clicking a link in an email (e.g., in the daily email update from Motley Fool (tm)), that location will commonly (not always) appear when I start Firefox, even though I have set Firefox to start on my home page. Furthermore, the search engine that appears in the search engine window at the upper right will be ask.com, even though I have moved ask.com to the bottom of the list of search engines and even REMOVED it completely. Even after that, when I booted the computer this morning and started Firefox, ask.com was back and had become the default search engine again.

This problem also can occur if Firefox is started by another program accessing the internet. For example, my computer currently wants to go the the PC Tools (tm) website, because I accessed it through my registry cleaner a few days ago.

This problem NEVER occurs if I access a website through the normal way, that is, by starting Firefox and going to a website. It happens when Firefox is started in response to a call from another program, most commonly from a link in an email.

If this problem has already been discussed, I apologize. I DID attempt to find it in previous discussions but could not.

This reply by cor-el was a partial solution to the problem. But there was a further problem. Ask.com had a .exe program installed in my computer along with a program I had installed (Webroot anti-virus and Spy Sweeper), and this .exe program would keep restoring ask.com as the default search engine after I removed it. I had to use the "remove program" function of the Control Panel to remove the .exe program (called Webroot Ask.exe or something close to that) to finish the job.

So to dispose of the problem, follow the advice above from cor-el, and then go to the Control Panel, track down some form of ask.exe, and remove it.
