Cannot access secure sites with FireFox that I could before I downloaded Patch 3 update for Windows XP; but I still can with Intenet Explorer.

Firefox was working fine until I installed some Microsoft updates for Windows XP. Now I cannot access Gmail, my online bank accounts, etc.. basically any secure sites. However, I still have access to all those sites if I use Internet explorer. With Firefox I get the message about "Error code: ssl_error_ssl_disabled......". Now when I start Firefox I get the message about : "Could not initialise the application's security component....." I tried the fixes suggested in the online help for both of these messages, but none of the settings were incorrect. Nothing looks out of place. HELP!!
