My Firefox seems to have gotten a virus "Authentication Required"

more options

When I open Firefox, a window comes up that reads "Authentication Required". It encourages me to phone "Microsoft Help Desk" (I work on a Mac - fully updated OS) and give them my username and password. There are "cancel" and "ok" buttons which start a man's voice saying "virus detected" or some such. It just will not stop. The buttons are totally ineffective. The only way to get rid of the message is to do a shutdown and restart. I have uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it from the Mozilla web site. But as soon as I try to start Firefox it does the same thing. I have not deleted my Profile folder because that may not even do the trick. Does anyone have experience with this problem and how to get rid of it? I am writing this from Safari. Thanks DSBPenna

This might be just a very bad website and not a problem on your computer. Try the keyboard shortcut Command+w to close the problem tab.

With some of these sites, pressing the Esc key quickly several times in a row will break the Reload - Redisplay cycle and let you close the tab normally. In other cases, you may find that closing dialogs in a particular order resolves the issue. On yet others, when you move the mouse, they start behaving badly again. Especially in case, the keyboard shortcut can be a lifesaver (or data saver, depending on how you look at it).
