Firefox failing when opening new tab

I have Firefox on two PC's with synch enabled. On both opening and searching in a single tab mostly works fine. However open a second tab and doing a Google search is ok until clicking on a result to open it. This usually ends In a "connection failed" but occasionally eventually does open the link. Firefox is very slow to respond after this until it is closed and reopen ed.
