How do I reverse the 57.0 update to have all of my extensions back?

The changes to version 57 are terrible. Most of my extensions don't work, and it looks like some of them may have been uninstalled. Why was this update installed without first informing me what was going to happen? How do I reverse the update to get Firefox working correctly the way it was before the update? And don't tell me to create a new user account and install a fresh download. I have had to do that before - it takes forever to get everything back to the way it was.

First, Type about:preferences#advanced<enter> in the address bar. Under Advanced, Select Update.

[v57+] Type about:preferences#general<enter> in the address bar. Select Update.

Check the settings.

Also turn off Use a background service to install updates

If you still want to downgrade, look under; I still want to downgrade. Click the Directory of other versions and languages link. Look for the directory of the version that you want. But, remember that old versions may have security issues.

"Why was this update installed without first informing me what was going to happen?"

Updates are enabled by default and the pref for "Check for updates, but let you choose to install them" doesn't give the user enough time to say "not now, later" or the user doesn't even see that message due to it getting hidden behind the main browser window.

Then there is the "background service to install updates" that Fred mentioned.
