Hi, So I am a little confused I am trying to see if I "upgraded" from the old sync to the new sync. I have a HP Beats laptop with windows 10 I restored it to windows 8.1 first thing I did was download Firefox. I logged into sync and nothing happen no bookmarks no changes at all. Last time I can remember restoring this computer was beginning of 2016 and as I remember I had no problem that was after Firefox stop supporting the old sync system. So I guess my question is... if I log into sync and have no bookmarks etc...did I not have a backup to begin with? If not how do I start a new one or does it "sync" automatically like before? Little confused just looking for clarification, thanks! :D

Hi

Thank you for your question about the Firefox Sync service.

It appears from your question, that you are using Firefox Sync as a back up service. This is not what Sync is designed to do. The Firefox Sync service takes a copy of the data you wish to include and transfers it to a second device (typically a mobile device such as a tablet or a telephone) running a copy of Firefox. The storage in between all attached devices is both temporary and fragile and is not stable enough to be (and is not designed as) a reliable backup service.

If you have a copy of your Firefox profile for desktop Firefox, you may be able to recover your bookmarks and other data. Please have a read of this article.

If you have a copy of your data on a mobile version of Firefox, please follow these instructions to connect it to Firefox Sync to copy your data.

I also notice that you are using an older version of Firefox. I strongly recommend that you update to make sure that you have the latest security and stability fixes. You can read more about how to do this here.
