Brand new machine. Thought I would download Firefox, sync all my old bookmarks, and be off & running.

Uh, no. It does create a shortcut on the desktop, but trying to use it just results in endless "working". Looks like it is Edge or nothing.

I did jump through the hoops to make FF my default browser. But nothing. Ended up uninstalling FF. Goodbye FF, goodbye bookmarks I guess.. and it p*sses me off greatly.

Did Firefox ever show the built-in home page? If it could show internal pages but not access the internet, these might or might not be relevant:

Firefox never showed anything. It opened a window that endlessly "worked". No error messages, just no results. I do have a slow connection, 5Mbps (and happy to have it), but it's not THAT slow.

I'm very disappointed that Mikey is able to dictate the browser, if that's what this is. Weren't they already found guilty of that same thing in antitrust cases about a hundred years ago??

5Mbps doesn't sound slow to me. If you decide to test again, check whether you can launch Firefox to a blank page. From the Run dialog or the system search box:

firefox.exe -url "about:blank"

If not, I suggest:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 44.0 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Rename the program folder as follows:

(64-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

(32-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in step (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Can a cleanly reinstalled Firefox start up to an internal page?

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

  • \OldFirefox\Plugins
  • \OldFirefox\browser\plugins

New day, re-downloaded firefox, and this time it works fine! Very happy!

Had a problem with sync.. it synced bookmarks from an old laptop instead of the current ones on my desktop, because I unwittingly gave an old account name.

So loaded desktop bookmarks to USB drive ("backup") and "restored" to new W10 laptop, automatic overwrite of existing bookmarks. All is groovy.
