I get a message saying I'm running an older version of FF but when I go to check on updates, the circle spins saying it is checking but nothing happens...?
as above..."checking for updates..." and nothing happens.

Sometimes this happens. Please just download Firefox 36 from www.getfirefox.com and install it over your current version of Firefox. Everything will update and you should be good to go
