My provider's SMTP server only works 1 out of 10 times. It'd be great to have an auto-retry on failure.

My provider's SMTP configuration or server is terrible. I have tried every support avenue to get them to fix it, it's not happening. For the time being, I cannot switch to another provider. A setting in Thunderbird to retry sending when the SMTP connection fails/times out would be wonderful. Thanks for your time.

Timeouts are often caused by over-aggressive scanning of outgoing mail by antivirus apps. What is the antivirus and its mail settings? If the issue is caused by the SMTP, consider adding an account such as gmail and setting up your account(s) to send through the gmail smtp.

@sfhowes, I am only using the AV that comes with Win10, with its default settings. I am going to consider your suggestion of using gmail SMTP, didn't even think of that. I still believe the option I asked for would be helpful, but I recognize it being something of an edge case. Thank you for your thoughtful suggestion!

Even though it's Windows Defender, I would still add the TB profile folder as an Exclusion, the same recommendation for any AV app:

If timeouts persist, you could try the gmail option, or increase the mailnews.tcptimeout preference in Options/General/Indexing, Config. editor, if the fault lies with the service provider.
