The Options Menu does not give any hotword (letters) in the main list of choices such as Home, Search, Privacy & Security, Sync.

I frequently invoke the The Options menu via ALT+T+O. But I cannot progress further. I regularly want to call up Saved Logins in the Privacy & Settings menu.

Any advices on how to do this - go to Saved Logins after routing to Privacy & Settings - with the keyboard throughout will be gratefully received.

When I open Options, "Find in Preferences" is the focussed item, so I can type the start of "Login", and then fairly quickly get to the state where it is just a few tab presses to get to "Saved Logins".

Does that help?

Hello cycle_chaser,

In addition to the above :

You could use this URL :

chrome://passwordmgr/content/passwordManager.xul

(and bookmark it ....)

Thank you. Inventive but I am a resolute keyboarder. From longtime use of Word, Lotus 1-2-3 and Excel.

I am puzzzled why most sub options like Saved Logins are hot words but their parent menus, in this case, Privacy & Security are not hot worded.

Thank you, McCoy. I am most leery of using a password manager. As explained to Standard8 I am looking for a pure Keyboard Shortcut solution that will take me to my destination of Saved Logins... .

You don't have to use the Password Manager to use that URL
(I understand why you would think that, though).

I thought you just wanted to get there as fast as possible - 'can't find a keyboard shortcut that will do that (sorry ....)

Thanks for your efforts, McCoy.

Perhaps you can help me. At the outset I thought my inability to get to Saved Logins by keystrokes only, was constrained by my eyesight - inability to see - or a failure of my computer, to detect any hot letters (link letters) in the main menu choices of Home, Search, Privacy & Security, Sync.

To me this is a design flaw. It shows any inconsistent approach. The General menu can be viewed direct from any web page by keying TO. So why have hot worded sub-options if a user cannot select the governing menu choice by a hot word? It means using a combination of mouse and keyboard. This is inefficient.

So my question is this. How do I raise this issue with the Mozilla design staff? Any advices will be welcomed.

Many thanks for the survey and discourse links, McCoy.

As you will probably guess I am familiar with many of the Firefox keyboard shortcuts. Thanks, nevertheless.

In case anybody wonders (like I did, till I started to experiment) :

You are talking about Alt + to, which takes you to "about:preferences", where "General" is always the first option, no matter how you access it.

You could ask the developer of this add-on if he can think of some keyboard shortcuts that will do what you want (but I seriously doubt it) :

I will try this as you suggest.

For your information I supplied an observation through the survey link that you gave me. I wrote (subject to later edit):

There is a significant shortcoming in the underlying rationale of using keyboard shortcuts.

The aim here, presumably, is to enable efficient navigation to a frequently used menu option. However many of the sub menu choices in a main option can only be selected by a mouse-click. Many of the hot letters within an option do not work with the Ctrl or Alt key (the standard convention).

This is very evident in the “Options” menu. Many will wish to visit, repeatedly in my case, the “Saved Logins” to review a particular ID or Password. However, the pathway to this forces the user to mouse-click the menu “Privacy & Settings” before “Saved Logins” can possibly be invoked by the suggested keyboard short cut hot letter (Alt+L). Indeed, in many cases there is a duplication of the keyboard short cut/hot letter. “Clear data” is an example.

This is baffling and seems to me to be a design flaw. It shows an inconsistent approach. The “General” menu in “Tools” can be viewed directly from any web page by keying Alt+T+O. So why have hot worded sub-options - such as “Saved Logins” if the governing main menu choice - in this case “Privacy & Security” is unavailable by a hot word (underscored letter)? It means using a combination of mouse and keyboard. This is inefficient.

Any resolution of this will be greatly appreciated. (End of survey input.)

Note that you can also find "Logins and Passwords" in the "3-bar" Firefox menu button drop-down list, but it isn't really convenient to get there. You would have to set focus to the Navigation Toolbar (location bar) and then first press Tab until you are past the page actions an on the at the right end of the Navigation Toolbar , then use cursor right until you focus the "3-bar" Firefox menu button and then press Enter or Space to open the menu and then go down to "Logins and Passwords". You can get there, but is require a lot of key presses (i.e. Tab to cycle though the various containers and cursor Right/Down to go to the wanted item).

Many thanks Cor-el for your thoughts. As you point out the manoeuvre requires a multiplicity of keystrokes.

As a longstanding user of the classic applications such as Lotus-1-2-3, Excel, Word, Word Perfect etc. keyboard shortcuts are the most efficient cognitive technique for common and frequently used commands.

Firefox bemuse me. Keyboard shortcuts are seemingly promoted and offered. But they are, in effect, limited only to access of the 7 menus (from File to Help). Within each of these menus numerous hot key options are suggested but do not, according to my efforts, work.

A baffling shortcoming for such a good and well supported browser.
