Hi all,

I have an error with a specific Firefox installation (not this one I'm using right now) where Firefox never asks whether to save logins and passwords for any site. I have tried ones that work on other Firefox installations. I have tried with safe mode and checked whether Firefox's settings are configured to save logins and that there are no exceptions. Firefox is also not in private mode nor in "always use private mode" settings. History in the settings is set up to "remember history", the default. I tried on the same installation with a different user profile, which sorts out the problem. I've also found out that there are saved logins without passwords, so on some sites I will get autocomplete suggestions for a username but when I choose that, no password is entered. The version is Firefox 53. I already asked the question here, but somehow this page has vanished :( https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/t5/Firefox/Firefox-doesn-t-ask-to-save-passwords-for-a-specific-user/m-p/1389247/highlight/false#M1046458

I have found this question where users had similar problems, but none of this solved my problem: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/944475

I did rename the key3.db file to OLDkey3.db and the logins.json to OLDlogins.json. Didn't seem to change anything, I even still get suggest the usernames that will result in no password input. As this is a newer version of Firefox, no signons.sqlite file is in the profile folder. I tried an addon that saves logins however trying to do that resulted in an error.

My only hunch for an explanation is that there is or was a bug that messes up the files where logins and passwords are saved when Firefox sync is enabled. Because sync was used on the 2 installations that have this problem, but I've never come across this as I don't use sync. Sync has been disabled now, no change. Also I remember setting up a fresh install and it did ask for passwords, however after setting up sync it didn't work anymore.

Thanks in adance.

I was able to solve this issue by turning sync back on and then clicking on "save my passwords".

I don't know whether there was or is a bug that causes this, e.g. by enabling sync, setting Firefox to not save passwords and then disabling sync. Maybe it's worth investigating that issue to see if it's still there.
