I tried to sign in to airbnb.com yesterday using my facebook credentials. It didn't work and said an error had occurred. I was able to sign in to facebook, but in the end I had to have airbnb send me a password recovery e-mail and I set up a straight-up login there. That way I was able to log in. Problem solved, no big deal, let's move on - until today. I tried to sign in to goodreads.com. This time, clicking onto the "Sign in with facebook" button lead to no reaction at all, even though I was already successfully signed in to facebook. So I slept with the enemy and tried IE 11 - no problem, the facebook signin worked! And it used to work on FF, too... Adblock Plus, Ghostery, Flashblock are add-ons I've installed that might perhaps have an influence - though why they wouldn't have had it before I don't know. A lot of my plugins aren't automatically enabled.

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache.

  • Clear the Cache

Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

and

  • Remove Cookies

Warning ! ! This will log you out of all sites you're logged in to. Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the tool bar. Followed by;

Windows; Tools > Options Linux; Edit > Preferences Mac; application name > Preferences

Then Privacy. Under History, select Firefox will Use Custom Settings. There is a button on the right side called Show Cookies.

If there is still a problem, Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} While you are in safe mode; Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the tool bar. Followed by;

Windows; Tools > Options Linux; Edit > Preferences Mac; application name > Preferences

Then Advanced > General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.

Poke around safe web sites. Are there any problems?

Then restart.

I always clear the cache, so I knew that wasn't it. Clearing cookies didn't help either.

However, starting in Safe Mode meant the signing in process worked without any further issues, even before turning off hardware acceleration. I turned it off anyway.

I restarted Firefox, and it once again didn't work. The pop-up facebook sign-in on goodreads.com failed to appear. I checked flashblock: goodreads was already whitelisted. So I tried whitelisting goodreads.com on ghostery - and voilà, the signing process worked. (Oddly, airbnb.com then signed in automatically, without whitelisting airbnb.com on ghostery. I think it might have been another problem when it didn't work with that site.) I suspected it was the "facebook connect" widget that needed to be allowed. I removed the whitelisting and only allowed the tracker for facebook connect, and it didn't work - until I refreshed the site.

So - for this particular case - ghostery is the culprit; I can either whitelist goodreads.com entirely or just allow that one tracker for the sign-in process to work.

Thanks, Fred, for the helpful advice!

That's good to hear. Happy computing.
