When I did not have Thunderbird I could delete all emails by checking one box. Now I have to do it one at a time, but the main problem is sometimes when I delete one the next mail comes up automatically and therein lies the problem. The emails I do not want to open come up and this has caused me to get a versus. McAfee took care of the versus, but someone tell me what I am doing wrong and how to delete email the right way and has Thunderbird created this or should I turn to Frontier who is my service provider for the answer. Thank you. D F

I assume you mean a virus.

I would be extremely interested in hearing how displaying an email resulted in your getting a virus as it is not possible with known exploits, unless you have show images turned on for all mail and even then almost impossible would cover it.

Hey thanks for taking the time to help out. I know very little about the how and why of things since I will be 87 Aug. 20th and learned how to compute by trial and error over the years. I thought you got a virus sent in by email or by opening prompts sent to you when searching for information or maybe I don't understand your answer at all. However my question is not about the virus. I like computing when it was easy and without having Windows 8.1 and I could open only the email I wanted to read and delete the email I didn't and not have to do it one at a time. What ever the reason it is not working that way now. DF

If you want to delete several messages in one go: make sure the Message Pane is visible - toggle the view using f8 key.

Select the emails. To select various emails: press and hold Ctrl and click on the messages to highlight them.

To select a block of emails: Select first email Press and Hold Shift and click on last email in the block

To select all emails in the folder. click on first email to get focus Press Ctrl and A

Selected emails will appear as 'conversations' in the Message Pane. you will see a 'Delete' button - click on it.

The emails will be marked as deleted and should appear in the Trash/Deleted folder. If you deleted quite a few emails, I would suggest that you then right click on folder and select 'Compact'. This removes all traces of marked as deleted emails. More info on compacting - what it does and why it is important.

You can select to auto empty the Deleted folder or manually: To Auto empty on exit Thunderbird:

  • Tools > Account Settings > Server Settings for the mail account
  • Under 'Message Storage'
  • select the checkbox 'empty Deleted folder on Exit'
  • click on OK

To manually empty the deleted folder: right click on Deleted folder and select 'Empty Deleted' to fully remove all hidden traces of deleted emails: then right click on Deleted fodler again and select 'compact'
