This seems to happen occasionally if you have certain add-ons. Some past threads:

ADDRESS BAR NOT SHOWING URL OF WEB PAGE - resolved by disabling divx plus web player html5

URL of site disappears from location bar, says only "go to a website" | Firefox Support Forum | Firefox Help - resolved by disabling or removing DivX Plus Web Player

Upon opening a new window, Firefox 9.0.1 gives me a "Go to a website" message in the location bar, regardless of what site I'm at and doesn't display the URL I am looking at, and the stop/reload button is greyed out. Is there a way to fix this? - resolved without a specific explanation, but probably related to add-ons

Et cetera. Does that help?

I have the same problem. I have disabled all add ons and I still have the problem. I have had it since I installed FireFox. It only seems to happen when I click a link that opens a new window, but I can't see the URL. Very annoying problem.

Try the Firefox SafeMode to see how it works there.
A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons.
Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Firefox SafeMode

When in Safe Mode...

  • The status of plug-ins is not affected.
  • Custom preferences are not affected.
  • All extensions are disabled.
  • The default theme is used, without a persona.
  • userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored.
  • The default toolbar layout is used.
  • The JIT Javascript compiler is disabled.
  • Hardware acceleration is disabled.

  • You can open the Firefox 15.0+ SafeMode by holding the Shft key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • Or use the Help menu item, click on Restart with Add-ons Disabled... while Firefox is running.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.

If it is good in the Firefox SafeMode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one.
