I tried deleting cert9 and key4 and session.json, none of those helped.

I have several POP accounts. I may be forced to use at least one IMAP account from Protonmail.

Firstly; Will having multiple POP and one or more IMAP accounts on the same Thunderbird be an issue?

Secondly. IMAP by its very nature is insecure and high risk. Email is stored on servers I have no control over, that can fail, be hacked, sold off, backed up or a number of other things. Sure, my PC could potentially be hacked, but I'd much rather have my emails, which are very personal and private to me somewhere that I control.

I have no mobile devices. I use only one PC for email. It uses only Thunderbird. I do not now or ever want to use web email.

So, how do I delete emails from an IMAP server? I read somewhere that I need to move emails to my local folders? So I would need to set up a filter to move all incoming email to a secondary inbox and then another filter into the relevant sub folders. I get some email from people I've not received emails from before so I won't have a specific filter set up for them initially hence the first filter.

Would that work?

I gather then that the next time Thunderbird syncs (checks for email?) it will then delete the email from the server?

If that won't work is there another way to automatically remove email from an IMAP server?

From reading through posts on this forum I see that I may also lose my notification sounds? I currently receive a received email notification for all emails, even those moved to sub folders. (refer https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1155074)

Another hitch in this is that I'm stuck on 52.9.1 because Mozilla removed support for most of the add-ons I use and only half of them are compatible with newer versions of Thunderbird. One that is very critical to me is one that selectively encrypts email for specific contacts using S/MIME certificates. AFAIK this is not natively available in later versions of Thunderbird, and the author states Mozilla has made it impossible for him to maintain the add on.

I am nearly 73 years old, and well affected by Parkinson's Syndrome and vision AND am loosing my ability to walk, rtalk, and see. I don't recall fiddly details anywhere as well as in the past.

I think it would be an advantage to see what I am typing. The simplest error with a password can wreak havoc with one's time and sense of self. If there is something I can adjust, or if a brief bit of coding may well be a splendid help.

I have email filters set-up to delete any emails from senders who are not in my address book. However, if the email is missing the sender ("From:" tag missing) the email is retained. I would like an option to create a filter based on missing "From:" tag. This would help protect users from scams and junk emails.

Thunderbird is caught in a loop: After importing my personal key and accepting it, everything seems fine. I then need to verify the recipients key. Afterwards, the private key isn't verified anymore. Reinstalling Thunderbird hasn't helped, currently running version 91.10.0 on 64-bit Windows 10 (the problem occured right after installing thunderbird and exists since then). I already tried to generate a new private key, but the problem remains the same.

Hi

I have a thunderbird with 3 google accounts and 2 ovh accounts Since today I'm annoyed with my google (no problem with ovh) accounts that ask me for my password every time I try to search new messages.

I confirm the password, I confirm on my phone that "it's me", I confirm that I validated, it seems to work but

- it does not retrieve my new emails
- it asks me again for the password the next time

I am in POP port 995 and SSL/TLS / OAuth2 I tried to delete the saved passwords, to disable the firewall I'm out of ideas...

Thanks in advance for your help

I'm running Ubuntu 18.04. Would update to latest Ubuntu LTS but our internet is really slow and it's capped. Thunderbird version 91.9.1. I use TB to retrieve/send emails from two Gmail accounts. Both are set up as POP. This morning TB failed to get email from the second email account. First error message is "Sending of password for user XXX did not succeed. Mail server pop.googlemail.com responded: Username and password not accepted." I clicked OK, got second message. "Login to server pop.googlemail.com with username XXX not accepted."

Fortunately our main email account is still working.

Looking at Password Mgr in TB, I have 5 entries. There are two "mailbox://pop.gmail" entries, one for each email account. There are two "smtp://smtp.googlemail.com" entries, again one for each email account. There's one "oauth://accounts.google.com entry. This one has an extremely long password. 40 or 50 characters?

I read some stuff about OAuth but it's confusing. Read some instructions for tweaking TB to use OAuth but I don't want to break one or both accounts!

Trojan infection on IMAP

I have a new Windows 11 computer and I have been using Thunderbird on previous computers for more years than I care to admit, pretty much since its inception.

Yesterday I received an expected email with several PDF files attached. One by one I opened them and printed the files then, at a certain point I had Windows Defender pop up a warning for a Tojan "Wacatac". In quick succession after that it popped up more warnings for "Wacatac" and "Oneeva".

I immediately closed Thunderbird and ran Defender to remove the threats, which it seemed to do and then gave a clear scan.

Following this I opened Thunderbird again and If I tried to open nearly any attachment the system started working very hard and Thunderbird gave a "Not responding" message. Also at one point I noted that Thunderbird reported that it was downloading messages even though there were no new messages.

At is time I started to get a huge number of warning messages with more malware than I bothered to record but I noticed a downloaded and various advertising or redirection malware.

I then detached all of the PDF files in the suspect email and scanned them separately - they did not result in any infection. I then deleted the email in question. My assumption was that the files themselves were downloaded directly from the server and that perhaps the infected file was somehow concealed.

I noted that all of the infected files reported by Defender where in a profile inbox folder for my IMAP server. This is normally a hidden folder so I had to turn on viewing of hidden files and folders in Windows Explorer. I reasoned that since I was using IMAP and hoped that the files on my email server were not infected (except the mail that I had deleted) I could safely delete the entire inbox folder and let Thunderbird re-build it the next time I used it.

For precaution I also downloaded and installed the latest version of Thunderbird over my existing installation.

All this was a bit intuitive as I had no idea how or if it would work.

I am pleased to say that the combination of deleting the suspected infected mail, deleting the IMAP inbox folder, and reinstalling TB over the existing installation seems to have resolved the problem. When I restarted Thunderbird it re-created the profile folder that I had deleted and I was able to open various attachments without encountering the problem. Logically it seems that I may have been correct that the Trojan was hidden amongst the attachments in the suspect email and I have reported to to the sender.

I will now have to be very careful of any signs that I may have had theft of passwords. Fortunately most important sites use 2 step security. I really don't want to have to find and change all my passwords :(

Any comments would be gratefully accepted, though I do seem to have resolved the problem myself.

Today I can not access my thunderbird email. Must be the Google issue, worked yesterday. I have updated to the latest 91.10.0 release and still have the issue. Appears the update that should have updated the settings for this google situation, did not apply. Followed the instructions for possible correction: changed the accept cookies to all copies and always. Do not see a Config Editor under the General Preferences. At least not an area labeled as such. Do not know the status of javascript within my system. Current passwords do not have the oauth preceding any password. What steps should I take to correct this issue and be able to retrieve my emaii? Google has disabled POP access in Thunderbird. Specifically they have removed the option to allow "Less Secure Apps" from downloading emails using POP access. They define "Less Secure" as apps requiring only a username and password. Currently (as of June 2022) Thunderbird can not download Gmail emails using POP.

Just FYI I will gladly give up Gmail and keep Thunderbird. I believe the only workaround is to have Gmail forward all emails to another, more friendly, email provider until I am able to convert all my contacts.

Thanks!
