Thunderbird 78.10.1 on Linux

How can I make it so Thunderbird only goes to the configured mail server (and maybe OCSP checks)? It would be very beneficial to have that page updated so that those looking for this information know they can rely on it.

I have been trying to add another gmail account to Thunderbird. I have done this a number of times successfully but I cannot get this one right. I know I have the correct username (email address) and correct psassword. I have enabled POP for all messages and set up pop and smtp to be exactly like other gmail addresses I have.

Thunderbird: latest version 78 - up-to-date.

When I try to send or receive mail via Thunderbird - I keep getting an error window stating that my username and password are not recognised. Why? What have I missed? I double and triple checked everything. It is possible to see emails, send and receive on a browser by logging on to google mail but thunderbird refuses to accept the new account. I sent an email from another address to the new one and I see it in Google mail. If I send from the browser to my established / main email address I receive the test mail.

How can I get around the issue and solve it? The problem seems to lie with Thunderbird.

Thanks in anticipation.

Is there any way we can approve a generic domain as OK, instead of having to authorise each unique email reply, e.g. complaints@domain.com, service@domain.com, no-reply@domain.com etc just state tha anything from domain.com is OK. I accept it's not ultra secure but for incoming emails with html content it has to be better than having to approve each email

Why are emails from trusted sources, that I have been receiving for years suddenly going to junk/spam mail? I use the "shift J" to return them to my inbox, yet when left there for over 1 month, they still end up in SPAM. Again, these are normal emails from suppliers I have been receiving valid emails from for years... VERY ANNOYING. I clean out my inbox multiple times a day, moving emails to different directories for different suppliers, this has been going on for several months now...

When I open the TBird app I can access either email (only have 2) without entering a password. All I need to do is select the "Cancel" button and I can read any email - very insecure. I did not see any way of circumventing this, it's like not having a password at all. Any suggestions.

I made a decent living programming in assembly language, so I am not utterly stupid. However, I have aged beyond any understanding of these modern systems.

My main computer suffered a fatal crash, and so I broke out this laptop that has not seen service during the coronavirus pandemic. I did not have it written it down, so it is only by memory that I can claim it was running Thunderbird 26-point-something. Both machines are on Win 7.

Oddly, the system claimed that Thunderbird was "up-to-date", and that the machine was "on the release scheme". Knowing that my other Thunderbird installation was at 78.11.0, and putting aside the fact that I would have expected the laptop to auto-update the way the main machine regularly did, I went ahead and installed the 78.11.0, assuming that I would be bringing the laptop up to where the main machine must have been.

Whereupon Thunderbird refused to fetch my email without my supplying password(s) to the server, of all things. The laptop was able to fetch email before I "upgraded" it, so obviously it had any needed passwords tucked away somewhere.

I have not had to think of email-server passwords for perhaps 10 years, so that was a shocker and a complete blocker. It would have been helpful if Thunderbird had warned that the "upgrade" would impose some new, unexplained, password protocol. That is, if Thunderbird is in fact at fault here. Could this somehow be Comcast’s problem?

Comcast allows one to use 7 email addresses, and I use them all on the main machine, but only 3 on the laptop. I have two, written-down, passwords for Comcast, but only one of them works, the one that applies to 2 of the 3 in-service addresses.

The missing password applies to my main address, so I am in serious trouble here.

In days of yore, while idly exploring, I have seen some pages showing Thunderbird passwords, but cannot find any such now. I would have expected them to be shown under “Account Settings/Server Settings”, but they are not there. Would it do me any good if they were accessible? If they were thus available, wouldn’t Thunderbird just apply them? And how did Thunderbird ever lose them in the 1st place?

Although I now have restored, if limited, access with the one working password that I have, Thunderbird is making things difficult by repeatedly insisting that I frequently re-enter that same password. It happened again, just minutes ago, so I have a fresh example. I put in the password, this time checking “Use Password Manager to remember your password”, put the machine to “sleep” in order to attend to other matters, and upon return find Thunderbird again demanding the same password. I would guess that I have entered that password 15 times so far during this one day.

The wording of the “Use Password Manager” message is a little odd, but in any case it doesn’t in fact seem to remember anything.

Can I revert to an earlier version, perhaps as far back as 26? That seems like a desperate move, and it probably won’t work, but anyone can see why I would be tempted to give it a try. Before the main machine gave up, I had taken all the many offered Thunderbird updates. I have no record of the final version installed, but can say that it came sometime after Thunderbird changed to having a “CC” tab above and somewhat to the right of the email address block. Before that mod, one had to change the block(s) to the left of the address lines, which defaulted to “cc”, “bcc”, &c.

I am assuming through all this that this new password behavior is due to Thunderbird. It seems implausible that Comcast would change their behavior at exactly the same time that all these other troubles descended. If it is in fact Comcast’s problem, then it will remain severe since their system appears impenetrable from the outside.

My ISP = SBCGlobal.net; My email app = v 78.11.0 of Thunderbird; I also use the latest v of Firefox.

My problem is with TB, which will neither send nor receive emails; Msg = "Sending password for user me@sbcglobal.net did not succeed. Mail server inbound.att.net responded: Server error, please try again later." This was two days ago. I found my TB login info at tools>options>privacy&security>passwords. I cannot figure out where to go to change / reset the login password at ATT

My question is this: To fix this problem, do I change my PW on my system, then do the same at the SBC/ATT end to make the inbound.att.net server aware of the change? Is this how I should proceed? FYI: I'm a tech dippie. I need help. Tks

P.S.: I don't have an ATT account.

Greetings Forum:

After an upgrade, I noticed my Thunderbird installation on Debian 11 LXQt was no longer able to update email for any of my previously configured gmail accounts. Non-gmail accounts on the same TB installation are unaffected. The bottom window where I normally read emails shows:

Your connection is not secure

The website tried to negotiate an inadequate level of security.

live.thunderbird.net uses security technology that is outdated and vulnerable to attack. An attacker could easily reveal information which you thought to be safe. The website administrator will need to fix the server first before you can visit the site.

Error code: NS_ERROR_NET_INADEQUATE_SECURITY

I have not made any changes on the gmail side and I can still access the gmail account directly via WUI as well as my android app. Does anybody have any suggestions?

I have contacted Shaw about my email not working now. I get a message about how I cannot send it due to encryption issues. Shaw states that I am not allowed to use third party providers, but it worked just fine for many years. I have not changed any settings that I am aware of at this time....Thanks

Below is the message that I receive:

Sending of the message failed. The Outgoing server (SMTP) shawmail.gv.shawcable.net does not seem to support encrypted passwords. If you just set up the account, try changing the 'Authentication method' in 'Account Settings | Outgoing server (SMTP)' to 'Password, transmitted insecurely'. If it used to work but now doesn't, you may be susceptible to getting your password stolen.
