Preventing Focus Stealing When Restoring Session

I am using Firefox 115.3 on Debian 12.1. I have numerous tasks which require the use of my web browser and have allocated a different virtual desktop for each. This means that my browser session typically has several dozen tabs open in numerous windows at one time. Under normal circumstances, this works just fine (and is a testament to the engineering that has gone into this browser).

My issue is that Firefox renders my machine virtually unusable for a few minutes each time I restart my desktop session due to focus stealing. When I open the browser, several dozen windows pop up (as expected) and relocate to their correct virtual desktops (as expected); however, as the windows begin to load, the most recently active Firefox window steals focus repeatedly. If I am, for instance, in the process of typing my password into my desktop e-mail client, a Firefox window may steal focus from the password dialog. In practice, this focus steal happens once every few seconds for several minutes.

I would prefer that Firefox would not steal focus while restoring a session. Does anyone have any suggestions for correcting this issue?

playing video on YouTube is sometimes choppy

Most of the videos I watch on Youtube play normally, without any problems, but some play choppy, as if they lag, this is very rare on YouTube, for example, a couple of days ago I opened a video, it's choppy, and now I opened it, it's going fine, when I open a private window and go to a very well-known site, all videos without exception lag

Hello,

Am using Mozilla Firefox installed via flatpak on openSUSE. Certain pdfs display correctly but other pdfs displayed with Firefox (either locally or online) are displayed badly: spaces are replaced with a lower half block character, fonts not sharp. I installed Firefox from the openSUSE repos (not from flathub) and opened the same pdf and it displayed correctly. I downloaded the pdf and opened it using Okular and no problems. I also opened the “troublesome” pdfs on Firefox in Windows and it displays correctly. I conclude that the flatpak version of Firefox is causing some pdfs to display incorrectly but I don’t know why.

I installed flatseal to tweak the flatpak Firefox’s settings but nothing seemed to fix the pdf display issue. Please see screenshot below of how Firefox (from openSUSE repos, on the left hand side) and Firefox (from flathub, on the right hand side) display the same pdf from the internet. The online pdf in the screenshot and used as an example of the issue can be found at:

https://www.jrf.org.uk/sites/default/files/jrf/files-research/international_cities_rotterdam.pdf

Not sure why some pdfs display correctly in Firefox from flathub and others display incorrectly. I’d prefer to use flatpak’s sandboxed Firefox if possible. Is there anyone else with the same problem or someone who who found a solution to this issue?

Thanks

Infinite number of duplicate download windows

I just spent 15 minutes browsing and downloading a lot of images. When I was done I looked at my downloads folder and saw only half of them there. I checked the download history in firefox, and couldn't see some files. They were not queued or in progress. They weren't in the download list at all.

I reproduced this. I downloaded an image again. Right click, save as, click save. Then that image doesn't appear in the download history.

I tried some variations. Hitting enter instead of clicking save. Opening the image in a new tab and using ctrl-s.

Still, no image in the download history or on disk.

I quit firefox and re-openned. Still the file didn't appear on disk or in the download history.

Then I kept trying, and I got a second issue, which I think is related.

Often when I save an image, instead of one window popping up asking me where to save it, I get a second window popping up ontop of that, then a third, then a fourth. All ontop of each other. All asking the same thing. They take the focus, so it's not possible to interact with the main firefox window to continue browsing.

Sometimes if I hit enter literally 50 times then it will save the same image repeatedly, and eventually I can go back to browsing.

Sometimes there's more than 50 popup windows (my hunch is more than 100). My only solution then is to quit firefox forcefully. Which is annoying if I have state in other tabs that I don't want to lose.

This has happened many times over many weeks. It only happens on some file saves. I can't figure out why it happens on some, not others. (Right click > save, and also ctrl-s, they both do the same thing.)

This form won't let me attach a screen recording. Only screenshots. That's annoying because you can't really see the behavior from the screenshot. But I'll try. See the dark black border outside the download dialogue? That's normally a very faint transparent shadow. But because there's so many duplicate windows all exactly ontop of each other, those multiple transparent shadows have become opaque.

What you can't see from a static screenshot is that I could see each window appear ontop of the other. If I try to select the filename text and edit it, very quickly another window appears ontop with the default filename again. I can see the Firefox icon in the Gnome bar on the left shaking every time a new window pops up.

(Hmm, it looks like I can't *upload* screenshots either. I click browse, select a file, and then it doesn't get uploaded.)

I'm on Ubuntu 22.10 with Wayland.

I don't know if this issue is a bug in Firefox, or in Gnome. I've only seen this behavior with Firefox in Gnome. Not Firefox on another DE/OS. And not any other application in Gnome. This behavior has been intermittent since I bought this laptop and installed Ubuntu about a month ago.

Dear Firefox Support Team,

I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to seek assistance regarding a persistent issue I am facing with Firefox on my Kali Linux operating system. Despite my best efforts, I have been unable to resolve the problem, and I kindly request your support in rectifying it.

The issue I am encountering involves frequent tab crashes while using Firefox on Kali Linux. I have attempted various troubleshooting methods, including updating Firefox to the latest version, disabling extensions, clearing cache and cookies, and even reinstalling the browser entirely. Unfortunately, none of these measures have been successful in resolving the problem.

Considering the importance of Firefox in my daily activities and the need for a stable browsing experience, I am reaching out to request the assistance of a dedicated support team. It would greatly help if someone from your team could guide me through the troubleshooting process or provide specific instructions tailored to my situation. I am available at [email removed from public forum] for any further communication or clarifications you may require. Additionally, please let me know if there are any specific logs or error reports I should share to assist with the troubleshooting process.

I understand the challenges involved in troubleshooting unique system configurations, and I genuinely appreciate the effort your team invests in assisting users like myself. I have always valued Firefox as a reliable and secure browser, and I trust that your support will help resolve this issue and allow me to continue using it effectively on Kali Linux.

Thank you very much for your attention to this matter. I eagerly await your response and look forward to working together to resolve this issue.

Best regards, Harie.R

I don't know what happened, but after the latest version of Firefox Developer Edition, all websites appear to be broken, with most complaining about NS errors in the console, none of my extensions have data anymore, and even trying to log in to Mozilla, it complains that Local Storage and Cookies are disabled.

No matter what I do with any of my settings, I can't seem to fix it. Even tried creating a new profile on `about:profiles`, and starting with Addons disabled.

Currently running 115.0b3 (64-bit), but having to post this using Brave (unfortunately). Running Linux 6.3.6.

Hello,

I created a loading progress bar for Firefox which uses JavaScript to show how much of the current page is loaded at the bottom of the address bar.

Is there any way I can automate running JavaScript at the opening of a window? Like how we can change the appearance in userChrome.css?

Currently I'm copy pasting the script to console at the start of every window.

Frustrating experience trying to use Twilio Authy. Whenever I first installed it on my iPhone I was using Password1 and that is the only record it shows, with no obvious way to delete that entry now that I have dumped Password1 in favor of Bitwarden. Plus when trying to install on Linux Mint desktop it first wanted me to use Snap package but Mint uses Flatpak. Got it installed using default software manager in Mint, then when I wanted to authenticate it sent code to phone, but phone said already registered so no way to authenticate desktop version. Forget it ... I use my Yubikey for all my other 2FA and it works slicker-n-snot this Twilio thing is too much hassle comparatively. When Mozilla adds some other 2FA choices THEN I can use 2FA with FF, not this app. Ugh.

Before the latest update, I was able to open links (eg zoommtg:) but that quit working. I originally thought it was a problem with Ubuntu, but I tried in Chromium and it seemed to work fine. In addition to not being able to open links, I can't click on the "Show Folder" in the downloads dialog. This leads me to believe Firefox is having trouble communicating with the desktop.

  • OS Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS
  • Firefox Version 114.0.1 (Snap)

Ideally, I'd like to find a log or some indicator as to why this is happening. It's quite annoying because I find myself doing a lot of copying and pasting of links and what not. Any help would be appreciated.
