The (www.) address doesn't change when I change tabs and I can't return to previous page (the arrow is faded out)

the www address stays the same on the top line. I can put in the address for a different tab and it comes up fine, but when I change back to another tab, the address stays the same. I can click on a saved favorite site and it will go to that site, but the address on the line doesn't change. Even when you click a favorite address and don't change tabs, it will go to the new address, but the address showing on the address line doesn't change. For example I just opened a tab and clicked on "facebook", it went there fine, but the address line says "Go to a web site" then I clicked on "netflix", it went there fine, but the address on the line still says "go to a web site". Also, the arrow to take you back to the previous page is faded out so I can't click it. This started day before yesterday, Thursday 9/1/11. I hope you can help me get this back to working because I really love Firefox and have had to switch back IE and I don't like it at all. Thanks
