why don't downloads install automatically?

I've just updated to Firefox 5.0, and trying to update addons. When I click to download and install an addon, I am asked where to save it, and then I see the download window which closes when the download is complete. But the addon does not install automatically, and I am not asked if it should be installed. So I have to find the downloaded file and run it myself.

Is there any way to alter this behaviour as I thought that installation would be automatic or at least offered?
