Transfering email to same computer after OS reinstall?

I reinstalled my MacOS on my computer, but before hand, I copied the xxxxxxx.default file that I thought would allow me to transfer all my email to the new install of Thunderbird.

However, when I replace the xxxxxx.default file in my profile folder, it doesnt work. I get a "cannot be recognized or loaded" error.

IS there any other way to recover the email that is in my xxxxxxxx.default file?
