Back button, address bar, and new tab don't work in a 2nd window like it does when the browser is first started.

When I click New Window, the new window doesn't work like the window does when Firefox first starts. The new window doesn't open the home page, the back button doesn't work in the new window at all with any tab, and the web address in the address bar doesn't correspond with the actual web page you're on. It shows the last page that was entered into the address bar instead. The button to open a new tab isn't available when first opening a new window. You have to go up to File and click New Tab. I don't understand why the new window doesn't work exactly like the first window when the browser opens. Could somebody please tell me why? Or is there a fix in the works?
