Why is scrolling jerky using the Dell middle mouse button and pointing stick?

Greetings, I'm having a problem with multiple Dell computers. When I use the middle mouse button belonging to the pointing stick, then move the pointing stick, the window will scroll. Scrolling works fine in every other program I know of, but in Firefox it's very jerky. It will scroll perhaps half of page, then freeze for a split second, the continue for another half page, and so on. If I scroll using the touchpad or an external mouse wheel, it's perfectly fine. The jerkiness is only when I use the pointing stick + middle button. This seems to happen on both Windows XP (Latitude e6410) and Windows 7 (Latitude e6510). I have the latest touchpad/pointing stick drivers from Dell installed on both systems. The problem seems to happen on pretty much every web site I visit.
