I could extract the Firefox apk from my phone and sideload this onto my quest, but I don't understand why Mozilla don't make an apk available for direct download or make Firefox available via the Meta store. The latter I can understand as it's more time an effort, but I'm at a loss regarding the direct apk availability.

Does anyone know why this is only downloadable via Google Play?

Cheers

Hi

While we do still make Firefox for Android available for Android phones and tablets, we are currently in the process of closing Firefox Reality (our VR app) and it is no longer available for Meta devices.

You may wish to try the Wolvic browser on your Meta device that was based on Firefox Reality.

Sorry, what does that have to do with the Firefox APK for android?

You can get the Firefox 119.0 apk at https://github.com/mozilla-mobile/firefox-android/releases/tag/fenix-v119.0 https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/fenix/releases/119.0/android/

Fenix is the internal code name for Android Firefox.

That's awesome, thanks :-) Woohoo, time to sideload it onto my Quest 3!

Worth noting that while both devices run Android, Android for headsets is different to that for phones and tablets so Firefox for Android may not work on it.

Firefox for Android is mainly distributed through Google Play for the following reasons:

Security: Google Play verifies app authenticity, reducing the risk of malware.

Automatic Updates: Users get timely updates, enhancing security and features.

Monetization: Mozilla may have financial agreements with Google.

Compatibility: Google Play helps ensure Firefox works on various Android devices.

User Experience: Google Play provides a controlled user experience.

Efficient Updates: Critical updates reach users quickly through Google Play.

While it might be frustrating for some users, these factors influence Mozilla's distribution choices. They may explore alternative methods in the future.
