how can I get my bookmarks to display as icons like the apps do, rather than in textual boxes as appears to be the default position?
I was able to do this on my old droid but I just got the droid maxx.

Your question is unclear. Do you mean.
"How do add a website I am browsing using Firefox for Android to my Android homescreen so it shows up like a built-in application"?
If that's what you are asking then the following two step process should work (see the attached screenshot) :
1. long tap on the URL bar at the top of the screen for 1 second
2. tap "Add to Home Screen"
If that's not what you are asking, please clarify your exact quesion (what you did, what you expected, what happened and if possible post a screenshot of it not working)
