In our environment, we block all HTTP & HTTPS traffic at a firewall level and require said traffic to pass through the configured proxy server in order for it to access Internet resources.

When I try to update Firefox manually using "Help / About / Check for Updates" or when using the "Help / Help" menu feature, Firefox bypasses the proxy configuration and tries to access those updates directly. I can verify this as I watch the firewalls drop the HTTP / HTTPS traffic that should be routed through the configured proxy.

This is also the case when Firefox tries to check for auto-updates when starting up.

I have been unable to find a way that will force Firefox to honor the configured proxy settings (Auto-detect, system proxy, manual proxy and auto proxy URL all fail) when updating.

I am using Firefox 27.0.1

Any insights or direction would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Try to disable the Mozilla Maintenance Service (MMS).

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > Update: "Use a background service to install updates"
