error message: this adobe acrobat/reader canot be used to view PDF files in a browser
Problem occurred in Firefox 18.0.2 when a "sign" ID was created in Acrobat 9.5.3 (under Win XP). When sign ID was deleted, now viewing PDFs was enabled, but when printing of viewed PDF was attempted, again got the same error message.

Try both of these steps:
(1) Disable the Acrobat plugin
orange Firefox button or classic Tools menu > Add-ons > Plugins category
(2) Update your preference for opening PDFs
orange Firefox button or classic Tools menu > Options > Applications
Type pdf in the box to filter the list down to one or two entries. In the right column, choose a setting such as "Always ask" so Firefox will give you the option to open or save the PDF.
Does it work?

I have just downloaded V.19. PDF is included For the moment i would like to turn it off
Performed step 1 with aid of a Brown U help desk agent. (Plug-in was apparently created when I created a "Sign" ID in Acrobat, and sent doc via Firefox, so removed ID and "repaired" Acrobat. Could then view PDF, but would get same error when trying to print it in Firefox.) Now PDF opens in Acrobat not Firefox, which is fine. Oddly, we can't fix similar error occurring in IE (no plug-in or add-on was created, but similar error persists).
Hi PhilipBrampton, I'm still on Firefox 18. However, I think that any PDF reader plugin that you enable will override the built-in viewer. Try the two steps I posted above, in reverse, i.e., select the Adobe product instead.
Does that work? If not, you might want to start a new question, as it will help others find it better.
