You can copy the places.sqlite file to the current profile folder or restore the bookmarks from a JSON backup.
Note that doing the latter will replace all current bookmarks.
You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:
- Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder
all i can see is folders: cache, jumplistcache,mozilla-media-cache,offlinecache,safebrowsing,startupcache,thumbnails and files _cache_clean_ , urclassifier.pset and urclassifer3.sqlite
where is places.sqlite is located?
You are looking in the location for the cache folder (AppData\Local) and that is the wrong location. The Firefox profile folder is in AppData\Roaming
- C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
The easiest thing to do is to export the bookmarks as a backup, and this can be re-imported later in your new installation. (Save the backup file *.json to a usb drive for example).
menu - Bookmarks - Import and Backup - Backup
menu - Bookmarks - Import and Backup - Restore
Another option is to use a bookmark synchroniser plugin, one of which is is built into Firefox, or use an external one such as Xmarks.com. These store the bookmarks on a remote server and allow them to be copied to your browser on a different computer. Xmarks will synchronise across IE and Chrome too.
