With Internet Explorer I had my bookmarks (favorites), and all my personal files on a different partition, so when I re-imaged my Windows installation on C:, all my documents and bookmarks, and links to them were there again 'untouched'.

I did some searching how to do the same with Firefox, but I couldn't find how to do this. Is it possible at all? (to be clear; I don't want to import/export, I want the permanent location of the bookmarks on another partition)

You can create a folder on that drive that you want to use as the Firefox Profile Folder.

You can use the Choose Folder button when you create a new profile in the Profile Manager and browse to that (empty) folder that you've created to make Firefox use it.

You can transfer files from the old profile to that new profile.

I am not sure it is possible to move the bookmarks alone to another location.

What you are able to do is move the profile to another location (although i have not tried using another partition). The partition profile contains the bookmarks and the bookmark backups. Another alternative to consider is use of Firefox Portable.

Note by the way that firefox does not use IE type HTML bookmark files, although it is able to import them. (I dare-say Firefox may also open the HTML IE bookmark files but I have not tried that recently ). Whatever you do you are probably going to need to first of all import the IE favourites/favorites so they become part of the Firefox database places.sqlite

Thank you guys!

Changing the location of the profile folder works like a charm.

It's a lot easier than I thought. Searching for 'change location bookmarks' gave some complicated and contradicting scenarios.
