I'm running Firefox 8 on Vista. My tabs in use have grown to over 100 in different categories and are difficult to manage.

So I have recently tried Firefox add-ons foxtab and showcase ... and now I'm trying Tab Groups so that only a group of tabs is opened in any browser session.

But I soon found that I cannot use the complementary add-on "Showcase" when trying to group tabs. Showcase add-on had to be disabled and Firefox restarted.

I started my experiment with Tab Groups by first bookmarking all the active tabs (although session manager also keeps a backup of session tabs). I then started going through each of the tabs in turn to move them to newly created groups. Instead of using the drag & drop approach .. I right clicked on each tab in the browser to select "Move to Group" and then "New Group". The tab window disappears .. but then I have to click on "Group your Tabs" to "Name this Tab Group"

A suggestion to Firefox developers: It would help this tab grouping work flow if on selecting the New Group in menu a New Group Name can be typed into a field .. with check that it does not clash with other Group Names. This would avoid switching into the graphical representation of groups.

....

I created a number of groups in this way but after about 100 tabs something went very wrong and I found that I had 100 or so blank tabs. I think I might have closed Firefox in error with the top right close button instead of hitting the "Group your Tabs" icon. Whatever the reason it emptied a number of the created tab groups. And switching into foxtab showed over a 100 blanks. Luckily I had bookmarked all my tabs and I could try again. The names of the created tab groups were still there.

What are the likely causes of this corruption of tab groups?

....

Foxtab Advanced allows tabs to be grouped by either Name or Tabs Order.

It would be useful if foxtab could allow context menu to place tabs in Firefox created groups

and tabs in menu and carousel to reflect these groups. i.e, sync foxtan with created groups.

....

I used add-on Send Tab URLs to inspect the tab URL's .. and the blank pages were untitled ..

e.g.

I've just repeated the painstaking process of moving over a hundred individual tags (by right click) into named groups. But lots of blank tab content was created (it grows every time I try this and I'm up to 260 blank tabs).

After completion when I clicked on the "Group your tags" icon there was no sign of the moved tabs.

This is disappointing and I'm going to switch back to using Showcase and Fox Tab to see if I can get more reliable tab group management. Something is screwed up in my configuration. One guess is a possible conflict with an management add-on.

Where are these tab groups actually archived? In SQLite? Can a script be used to import from a text list of URL's?
