I pulled up a web page that was supposed to be in Greek, but the text was gibberish. I checked the Firefox Add-ons page called "Dictionaries and Language Packs". While virtually all the languages listed had dictionaries, far fewer had language packs. I checked the Knowledge Base and Forum, and didn't see any problem like mine listed. I also went to Tools --> Options --> Content --> Languages, and added on several languages, then rebooted. No improvement. I don't know where to go from here. Can anyone advise? Thanks.

Can you post a link?

Which encoding is selected in "Firefox > Web Development" or "View" > Character Encoding ?

Cor-el: My apologies for not responding sooner. Here's a link to the problem site: http://classic-web.archive.org/web/20080529041237/http://www.greekgeek.org/

On the left side of the screen, click on "Pharr's Homeric Greek". You will then see a list of lessons on the right side. Click on, say, Lesson 1. As you will note, most of the text on the page is in Chinese characters, with a number of non-alphabetic symbols thrown in.

The encoding is set at "Unicode (UTF-8)". Any thoughts you might wish to share would be most welcome. Thanks!

The page on the right side are opened in a frame.

Did you check "This Frame" > "View Frame Info" to see the encoding of that frame ?

Here's what "View Frame Info" showed for the table of contents page:

GREEKGEEK: ADDRESS: http://classic-web.archive.org/web/20080611051738/www.greekgeek.org/pharr.htm TYPE: text/html RENDER MODE: Quirks mode ENCODING: UTF-8 SIZE: 3.21 KB (3,286 bytes) REFERRING URL: http://classic-web.archive.org/web/20080529041237/http://www.greekgeek.org/ MODIFIED: Sunday, January 23, 2005 1:54:14 PM

In the Meta area are two tags: CONTENT-TYPE: text/html; charset=UTF-8 KEYWORDS: ancient greek, homeric greek, classical languages, homer, aeschylus, sophocles, independent study, self study, xml, pharr, smyth, ancient greek text manager, agtm, greek software, grammar, morphology, smyth xref, smyth cross-reference, puzzle, word-game, word game ____________________________________________________

.....and here's the "View Frame Info" for Lesson 1:

Can you attach a screenshot?

Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot and make sure that you do not exceed the maximum file size (1 MB).

I hope this works (I've never done a screenshot before). The uploaded image should be just below this text area. I couldn't figure out how to get rid of the Help screen on the far right of the image.

Thanks for your help.

That is a problem with that web page.
Apparently some JavaScript code got embedded with an UTF-16 encoding on that page.

Decoded it looks like this:

<SCRIPT language="Javascript">
<!--

// FILE ARCHIVED ON 20080611185817 AND RETRIEVED FROM THE
// INTERNET ARCHIVE ON 2011052 2224201.
// JAVASCRIPT APPENDED BY WAYBACK MACHINE, COPYRIGHT INTERNET ARCHIVE.
// ALL OTHER CONTENT MAY ALSO BE PROTECTED BY COPYRIGHT (17 U.S.C.
// SECTION 10 08(a) (3)).

Is there anything I can do to correct the situation? Thanks.

The gibberish code that you see on that page is not important. It is only some remnant JavaScript code that is showing as text rather than not rendered as being an HTML script tag. You can try to contact the website and ask them to take a look at that page if you see this happening on more pages. If it is only that one page then just bare it.

It looks like it's happening on every page...*sigh*... Also, I'm not positive that the site is being maintained any more. But I'll see if there's anyone there I can communicate with.

Thanks for all your help and advice, Cor-el -- I really appreciate your taking the time to investigate this!
