Recent upgrade from v4 to v5 caused the problem to re-occur. Does this patch still work for Firefox version 5?

Don't know if this will help you, but I had updated zone alarm and started having the problem. Went to add-ons and found the updated version of zone alarm was incompatible with firefox. Uninstalled zone alarm and downloaded Comodo. Have not had the problem again. By the way, Comodo has a higher rating than zone alarm.
