I've lost all my bookmarks and cannot bookmark anything else.

This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
That has just reminded me to do a manual backup of my bookmarks.
Firefox does try to keep some sets of autobackups of bookmarks, it may still have some that you can get back, especially if the problem occured within the last few days.

It depends on what exactly caused your problem and when it occurred. When you do try to recover any bookmarks it is wise to make manual backups as you work, it is easy to inadvertently overwrite the wrong set.
