Columns do not show in message list after re-install, and no label bar to sort messages

After a re-install of Thunderbird the Message List does not appear in columns, and there is no label bar at the top of the Message List to allow sort by date, sender, topic, etc. How do I get the Message List to appear in column format again? Thanks in advance.
