I turned on my laptop today and Firefox would not load. I restarted several times and same results so I clicked on "refresh firefox."

The browser opened after that. However, the tabs are on the top of the browser. I've had Firefox for probably close to twenty years now with no changes to how my browser is laid out.

I am also missing the search box and the "home website" bookmark shaped like a house that was on each side of the browser bar.

How do I fix this without hacking into the code that some suggest??

I cannot believe that Firefox would do such drastic changes without an option to change it back or opt out.

Please help. I've been on this browser configured exactly to my needs for almost two decades now and it is VERY frustrating.

Thank you in advance.

Hi, let's do the easy ones first:

(1) Home button & Search bar

Use Customize to locate the button and box and drag them to the toolbar where you want them: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars.

(2) Tabs

The tab bar has been on top since Firefox 4, although there was a preference you could switch to move it back down. Firefox 29 removed the preference, but you could use an add-on to move it. Firefox 56 restricted what add-ons could do, so you needed a userChrome.css file. To find your userChrome.css file:

On your Windows desktop, double-click into the Old Firefox Data folder. Then you'll find one or more profile folders -- they have a random part and a readable part, such as 23xy74b1.default -- that you can click into and then look for a chrome folder. Do you have it?

In Firefox 69 and newer you need to set this pref to true on the about:config page to enable userChrome.css and userContent.css in the chrome folder.

In Firefox 87+ the Library and the Home button aren't present by default on the Navigation Toolbar and you need to drag them out of the Customize palette to the toolbar.
