If I set my location to USA for Mozilla VPN, can it change somewhere along the way?

Hi all, I hope everyone is well! I have Mozilla VPN, set to USA and the closest city to where I live. I just had an odd thing with a show disappearing from Netflix and their tech person said that it was because of the VPN being out of the USA where the show isn't available. I checked my Netflix account on my tablet (because I haven't yet installed the VPN there) and sure enough, the show was there. I'm just wanting to learn about how the VPN works because it's set to USA so that would logically then not be an issue. So, can the VPN change location on a server somewhere that would cause this? This isn't a big deal really, I'm just curious about how it works. Thank you so much.

Hello!

Thank you for reaching out,

When you use a VPN to connect to the Internet, you use the IP address of one of our encrypted servers instead of your real IP address. Netflix uses geolocation services especially from IP addresses to provide different content to different locations.

I hope you find this helpful,

Thank you for responding. I understand that the VPN uses a different IP address; that's the point of it. My question is, when you turn on the Mozilla VPN, it asks you to select the location of the server and I chose the USA. Does that change even though it's what I chose? and if so, why give me the option to choose at all? Thanks again.

Hi there,

no the location does not change and should remain the same as the one you selected from the list.

Some websites or apps that are showing a different location are likely pulling from historical data or GPS data, versus the internet connection IP. Unfortunately Mozilla VPN can’t control these permissions in third-party apps. You could go into your device settings and withdraw GPS/Location permission from those applications to help resolve this. I also suggest that you delete cookies & cache and your browser history to resolve any issue with a wrong location being displayed.
