Updates

(1) View Image Info will be restored in Firefox 89. (You will need to enable it using the browser.menu.showViewImageInfo preference in about:config.)

(2) Until then you can call up the Page Info dialog using Ctrl+i (on Mac, Command+i) and click the Media tab. Or try my add-on that gives similar information (and a bit more): https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/view-image-info-reborn/ (screenshot #2)

Hi Diane, I don't have a straightforward replacement for View Image Info, but I added image info to one of my existing extensions if you want to try it. Its main purpose is to convert WebP files to other formats, but even if you don't use that, if you right-click the image and Ctrl+click (or middle-click) View Image to open the image in a new tab, you'll get the info displayed. I've taken the liberty of illustrating this with your user picture. (Due to extension restrictions on Mozilla sites, it might not work for the attached image.)

Extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/save-webp-as-png-or-jpeg/

Some context menus have been cleaned up in Firefox 87 and the "View Image Info" item has been removed along with some others. The best workaround is probably to check the image in the Inspector via Inspect Element in case there are a lot of images instead of scrolling through "Tools -> Page Info -> Media" depending on your use case.

  • Bug 1700239 - "View Image Info" is no longer present in contextual menus

Hi, what were you using this feature for? For example, getting the URL, dimensions, etc. Or using the Save As function in the popup dialog?

For dimensions, for Save As, and for its "weight". It kept me from having to open other prgs to find out what one rt click did so quickly.

What a great extension. I find image info even more quickly. An added plus: I'm now looking forward to running into that next WebP graphic. I left a review @Add-ons... THANK YOU for listening.

My colleagues often call me nuts for picking Firefox over Chrome. I've tried converting multiple times, but up to this point could not live without Firefox's "View image info". I use it dozens of times daily. "Inspect element" and the various add ons / extensions don't work as well (and they shouldn't given that it *was* a native feature).

I'm shocked this thread doesn't have 500 replies. Why on earth would Mozilla remove this? Please eliminate the design idea "smaller menu always better" and bring it back. Developers are dealing with right-click menus dozens of items longer daily. 10 vs 11 does not matter.

This "menu de-clutter" is #notworth

What don't you like about my extension? Let me know so I can improve it because I suspect that menu item is not coming back.

You do not even need to know how and why we have been using the feature. Some use it one way, others other way and me - I was using it my way for 7 years. People USED IT FOR MANY YEARS AND LIKED IT. !!! Please return the choice to context menu. If it will not return, I will have to dump Firefox completely (you already messed up the android app beyond usability of normal long-term user). I used it to see some image links in 3 clicks. Now I have to make 10 clicks to get to the same point.

Or create add-on that makes Firefox have the feature exactly the same way as it was before. Don't remove stuff - make existing stuff even better !!!

As a workaround for now, could you try this method to get the URL of the image:

  • right-click > Copy Image Location
  • paste somewhere that you can read the address

I actually used your extension well before this. I used it exactly as intended -> converting webP to png / jpeg. It works great (nice work) and, not surprisingly, you didn't include all the functionality of the "View Image Info" menu because why would you - it *was* natively built into Firefox.

I've discovered that part of why this thread doesn't have 500 replies is there are several others like it here and on reddit spreading around the complaints. Most seem to focus on image location and maybe a few re: dimensions. I (and likely many others) need and regularly use ALL of the features - location, type, size, dimensions (raw + scaled), associated text, and preview.

It's ironic that the "Open Source" browser is the one justifying a move like this saying, "The functionality is still there. Just click 2-5 extra times / view source / inspect element / toggle F12 layout tabs / copy paste URLs..."

Developers of all people should appreciate the extreme difference a single click can make once you're obliged to make it thousands of times per day.

jscher - if you can make an extension that behaves exactly like the old version that I'm forced to run now (see image), I and tens of thousands of others will download it.

Mozilla - Please bring back "View Image Info" !

Hi joel38, I submitted a new add-on that is more similar to the old display, but it is still under review and has a couple bugs to work out. Hopefully it will be ready by the time you update. For now, more info on Github:

It's live now:

Thanks, jscher2000, for creating your "view-image-info-reborn" add-on!

It looks like the Firefox developers are planning to re-enable this menu item with a "hidden" preference (meaning you'll have to manually edit about:config to continue using the old functionality). See:

It does look like this change has a low priority, so it may be a while before it's released.

It needs a non-employee to write the patch. I think it might be a good idea to have a more general preference to "unsimplify the menus" that could cover more of these "low usage" items. But that might delay it further, so...

Can you ask the brain-dead idiot that removed view image info from right click menu to restore it ASAP please ... many thanks

This feature was the primary reason I continued to use Firefox over Chrome. Very disappointed.

We need this feature back ASAP. This needs to stop. Aggressively removing features for the sake of decluttering is insane and will KILL the user base real quick. Firefox is a niche browser for nerds like us it's the truth. And nerds want a quality tool, a Swiss army knife that can enhance their web browsing. Not a dumbed down interface like Microsoft did with Windows 8 by cutting off useful and adding shiny stuff that doesn't do much. Firefox is not an art project it's a robust tool and should stay this way. That being said looking for an alternative to Firefox 87 on Windows or a fork right now just like I did a year ago when Firefox mobile DOWNGRADED to Fenix and I chose to keep "obsolete" Fennec F-droid as a replacement.

Chrome has options too, this response seems to ignore the core problem which was Firefox had a great feature that set it apart from Chrome. If I wanted to mess with options I might as well be using Chrome.

I want to echo what the others have said.

Removing the View Image Info option from the context menu was a mistake. It was one of the reasons why I stayed with Firefox over Chrome. It was useful for getting the image dimensions and size - so much easier than trying to dig for it elsewhere.

Please put this feature back.

Hi Weta_, earthventures, and jdyken, I know you prefer not to wait for this, but support forum volunteers are limited in what we can do. Here's where we are today:

(1) There is a bug on file inviting a non-employee developer to restore this feature with a new preference to enable/disable it; work is under way, but it might be a couple of months before it arrives.

(2) Until then, you can use an add-on as a more convenient alternative to calling up Page Info, switching to the Media panel, and finding the image in the list.
